My cat's paws are red, swollen, licking after dog flea shampoo. Why?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | American Shorthair | Female | spayed | 4 months and 28 days old | 6 lbs

Luna’s front paws are red and swollen around her nails. She seems to be licking and chewing her paws more than normal, too. We have used Soft Paws since she was about 8-10 weeks old, but removed them as soon as we noticed the irritation. We use the same litter we always have. The only recent “change” was 5 days ago - she jumped in the tub while I was bathing my dog with dog flea shampoo. What could be the cause of this type of irritation (allergy, infection, etc.) and how would we treat it?

It's possible the shampoo has caused irritation if it was recent. I would wipe the feet down and keep them clean and dry and also place an Elizabethan (cone) collar on Luna to keep her from licking as that will worsen any irritation. If the redness and swelling doesn't resolve, or worsens, I would have your vet take a look right away to rule out more serious issues such as infections in the nail bed or paws.
