My cat is scratching her ears raw. How can I stop it before the vet?

Recently my cat has been scratching near her ears a lot, and it's gotten to the point that she has scratched up her neck quite a bit. I have a vet appointment scheduled for Saturday (earliest they could get me in) but I wanted to know what I could do to treat it in the mean time

Poor Angie. Do not put anything in her ear. It sounds like she has an ear infection, but her ear drum needs to be examined to make sure it's intact before putting in any medication. Only the vet can do this. My recommendation is to put a cone on her so she cannot scratch her ear any longer. You can get one at a pet store or make one at home. My cat has been scratching her ear for a couple days. Slight redness lower part of ear, holds her ear down frequently.
This could be an indication of infection (bacterial, fungal, mites). She would need to be physically examined by your veterinarian for confirmation. A swab of the ear can be examined under a microscope in the clinic to make the diagnosis. The appropriate medication or treatment can then be dispensed or administered. IN the meantime, place an e-collar (cone) on her to prevent excessive scratching or rubbing.

Poor Missy looks like her skin is quite irritated! She requires a visit to the vet to determine the source of her itchiness. She could have an infection in her ear (bacteria, yeast, or both), ear mites, or allergies (to something in the environment like pollen/dust or to food) that is causing the inflammation. Your vet can look down inside the ear and possibly take a swab to examine under the microscope, and prescribe the appropriate treatment for her. Placing an e-collar on her until your vet is able to see her will help decrease the self-trauma she is causing.

Luna started scratching herself again, it's always on her head around her ears so I need to protect those areas. I don't want to make her uncomfortable with a cone again so I was thinking some sort of hat would be a good idea. I saw some ideas onlin
Oh my goodness, those hats are so cute! The problem with the hats is that typically cats hate wearing them, and you might have a lot of problems keeping one on Luna. I found a website called Pampered Whiskers, and they sell hats for cats. I will put the link below for you to check them out. You might also consider using an inflatable recovery collar for her instead of the traditional Ecollar. It looks like a donut, and it doesn't come out past her face which will keep her from bumping into things. I found one on Amazon, so I would google "inflatable recovery collar" to find it. Finally, I would make an appointment her vet to diagnose the cause of her itching her ears (it could be an ear infection, mites, fleas, or allergies) so it can be treated. Our cat has some weird thing on its ear which is bleeding and he keeps scratching it. we are not sure if he's been in a fight or it is something else. there are pictures attached. one had a black thing sticking out of it....is this some king of bug
It is definitely an injury but whether or not he did it to himself or it was due to another animal I cannot tell. I do not think there are any bugs there. He may be scratching the ear due to an inner ear infection. I suggest you take DJ to your vet for an exam because is there is an ear infection or something down inside the ear canal you cannot fix/treat that at home. My cat who is 1 year old has scratched one of his ears so much the hair has come off and the ear is raw and bloody. I have put a cone on him but as soon as he takes it off he scratches it raw again
The most common reasons that cats scratch at their ears are infections or infestations with ear mites. Ear mites can be treated by several different medications, some of which are over the counter and others that are prescription only. If there is an infection, an antimicrobial flush plus cleaning would be needed to clear up the affected ear. Steroids might also be warranted to assist with some of the inflammation and discomfort associated with the infection. Keep the e-collar on for the time being until you have resolved the problem. Sparrow will only make it worse as soon as you remove it, as you have already noted.

Our cat is 2 years old she has been scratching her ear. When she does she makes a noise like she is hurt. I can't see anything in the ear. Suggestions?
It is possible that Ginger has an ear infection. She has a vertical ear canals that curves into a horizontal canal. Her ear drum sits at the base of the horizontal canal. A lot of times, the problem is deep within the canal and cannot be seen from the outside. Ginger should see her veterinarian for an ear exam. If the ear is inflamed, has discharge deep inside or is painful and/or itchy, an infection is likely. A sample can be collected to look under the microscope to choose an appropriate ear medication and cleaner. If it is not an infection, she could also have a foreign body (piece of grass for example) or a polyp with her ear canal. I hope this information helps and Ginger is feeling better soon!

Should I get a surgical color for an 11yr old cat that keeps scratching his ears? I cleaned out the mites, and cut his back nails. He seems to be reopening the soars. I use nepsporin BID.
I am sorry Muchacho is not feeling well. Yes, you can buy an e-collar typically over the counter at your local pet store. This would be a good idea if Muchacho is causing injury to his skin. However, if he is really itchy I would recommend taking him to the vet for treatment of the ear mites and maybe antibiotics for his skin. Typically the ear mites will not resolve just from being cleaned. I hope that helps

My year and a half old, female, indoor cat has been scratching the area between her eye and ear so much that she is bleeding and scabbing. She is a white cat, so it is extremely evident how red and irritated her skin is. She's never done this before
Poor Lily! She could have an ear infection, which is why she is scratching that area so much. I would take her into a vet now for an exam. The vet can confirm if she does have an ear infection, and can treat it. It's important to have any potential ear infections examined and treated promptly, as leaving them untreated can lead to hearing loss.

This is probably due to a severe allergy, although it could also be fleas or mites. First of all, in order to rule out skin parasites, high quality flea treatment is given. It sounded like your veterinarian has done it already. The next step is to treat the allergy symptomatically and try discovering the cause of the allergy. Food can be indeed one the most common cause of it. Some medications can be given by the vet in order to stop the chewing and repair the skin lesions (steroids and antibiotics usually). There is also a nice topical spray available, it's called Cortavance and you can get it at the vets. Hopefully you will see some results after all this, if not you and your vet should consider starting on a long term allergy treatment.

Unfortunately, there is nothing you can do except to place an e-collar (cone) on her to prevent further scratching or rubbing. The ear canal turns inward, so you will not be able to see deep down where there may be infection or inflammation. Have her seen by your veterinarian to diagnose and treat any infection (bacterial, fungal or parasites) in her ear(s). If she is extremely painful or stressed, have her seen at the nearest veterinary ER.
