Why are my senior dog's legs collapsing and she's walking funny?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | German Shepherd | Female | spayed | 12 years and 11 months old | 73 lbs

My dog Roxi just got a lot of exercise yesterday. She is a Sheppard/Rottweiler/Chow mix and is 13 years old. So getting older. Came home and she was walking funny so I took a closer look. She doesn't seem to mind walking around, like she is not expressing pain or anything. But looks very uncomfortable... Her legs keep collapsing from under her. She shifts weight between her two back legs. Back and forth. Then her leg will get weak and collapse and the other one takes over.... Help is appreciated

Hello and thank you for contacting Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. These symptoms are possibly related to arthritis in the spine or hips. Please, take Roxi to your local vets for an appointment. Full clinical examination should allow making the diagnosis and adequate treatment can be started. It possibly will be a course of anti-inflammatory medications.
