Why is my dog's belly bloated and breathing abnormal after IV fluids?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Shih Tzu | Male | unneutered | 10 years and 7 months old

My dog vomited 6 times in a span of few hours 2 days ago and was pooping blood. We brought him to the vet and he was negative on viruses or parvo. He was given IV fluids and stopped vomiting and pooping but still did not eat food. We brought him back to the vet and the vet took blood samples for a blood test but the results will come tomorrow. So while waiting he was given another IV fluid bag. But his belly is softly bloated and he is breathing like sighs every breath. Is this due to the IV?

Hello and thank you for contacting Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. Fast, shallow breathing can be caused by fluid overload, so by administering to much iv fluids. Other causes of altered respiration include abdominal pain, fever, medications that were administered to Babbi. If his breathing remains abnormal for the next 1-2hrs minutes you should get in touch with your local vets as Babbi may need to be seen and assess again by a vet today.
