My dog is limping, licking a red paw. Is it a cut or cracked pad?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed | Male | unneutered | 60 lbs

My dog had been limping and is unable to stand, I’m assuming because he is hurting. I have touched every part of the extremity that is hurting and it doesn’t seem to bother him. It’s only when he walks that I noticed a limp. The only possible explanation is I noticed what seems to be a “cut” in his paw that he keep licking. He is an outside dog and is very active. Also, I am not sure if the redness surrounding the paw is normal. He is currently on enrofloxacin and vetprofen for UTI.

Ouch. That looks like a cracked paw pad. I would keep the area clean and dry (that sand he's on is going to easily get in there and lead to infection or more pain) and use a bootie and Elizabethan (cone) collar to help protect the paw. If it seems to be swelling, hot to to the touch, worsening, or looks infected, it should be seen by your vet right away to be cleaned and treated.
