Can dry ice from food deliveries harm my cat or make food unsafe?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Domestic Shorthair | Male | neutered | 5 years old | 10.5 lbs

My husband has ordered food that will be packaged in dry ice. I was wondering if dry ice can be harmful to my cat. If I open the package outside, wipe down the food items could I still be potentially harming my cat by exposing the dry ice to myself and the food items ?

As long as your cat does not contact the ice or vapor directly, there shouldn't be any problem. Unpacking it outside and disposing of the dry ice outside is a good precaution. The main danger is of suffocation from inhaling the vapors inside a closed space.
