My puppy has a deep wound from an animal attack. Should I see a vet?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Male | neutered | 9 months and 3 days old | 40 lbs

Our puppy came running inside helping with this wound, which appears to be deep (down to the muscle). We are concerned it may be from an attack from a predator like an owl. We didn’t clean it out but applied triple antibiotic ointment. His temperament is normal. Should we take him to the vet? Are antibiotics recommended? What are signs of infection?

Hello and thank you for contacting Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. You should take Murphy to your local vets for an appointment as this wound should be clipped, cleaned, flushed and potentially stitched up under sedation. It would take a very long time to heal if the wound was treated with antibiotics only. The symptoms of infection usually develops in the first 24hrs and include fever, discharge, swelling and pain around the wound.
