Why does my dog's back leg hurt after running but then get better?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Havanese | Female | spayed | 2 years and 8 months old | 12 lbs

My dog hurt her back right leg a week ago. We had just finished a two hour walk and I let her off leash to run and all of a sudden she stopped with her leg pulled up off ground. I gave her a few days off and when we tried to walk again she had a slight limp. Today she was laying down and jumped up to run to the door when someone came in. She squealed and pulled her leg up off ground like she did the first time. Once she rested again, she is walking fine and has her normal eating/bathroom

Hello and thank you for contacting Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. Intermittent, painful lameness in dogs of her breed is often related to slipping patella, hip problems (for the hind leg) and sometimes elbow dysplasia (for the front leg lameness). A visit at your local vets is recommended. Full clinical examination should allow making the diagnosis and starting treatment, if required.
