Dog's ear swollen like a balloon. Can I treat a hematoma at home?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Large (61lb +) | Male | neutered | 80 lbs

My roommates dog has been suffering from chronic ear infections and we have taken him into the vet. They flushed them and they got better but now we woke up yesterday and his ear is now the size of a balloon. We can't afford to take him into the vet again. What are some solutions that we can do at home? And should we puncture it to release the pressure? Please help

Hello and thank you for contacting Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. This is ear hematoma, most likely self-inflicted by Moose by excessive scratching or rubbing the ear. There are no remedies that you can use at home to help, I am afraid. Moose should be seen by your local vets again to drain the ear and ideally, place some stitches on the ear to avoid recurrence.
