My dog is itching after vulvaplasty. Can I use numbing spray?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | French Bulldog | Female | spayed | 1 year and 2 months old | 20 lbs

My dog had a vulvaplasty on Thursday and the itching is driving her crazy and won’t sleep. Can we spray on a numbing spray or do something? From everything we’ve read it says not to apply anything but just curios if numbing spray is ok. And if yes will it affect her stitches?

Hello. You can try a diaper rash cream, but only around & not on the stitches. If she continues to show great discomfort, then they do make a lidocaine cream that your veterinarian can order. A low dose of Trazodone may help her to relax & sleep as well. Please talk to your veterinarian as soon as possible to keep Maggie from damaging her surgical site while it heals. Thanks for contacting Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach.
