My dog has white bumps, marks, and flaky skin after surgery. Normal?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Moose (3yrs, YorkiePoo) had surgery to remove a foreign object. He had a few staples that came out a few days ago. He's back to being his happy, energetic self and isn't in any discomfort. Some white bumps have appeared along his healed incision line. He also has some white marks/discolouration on his skin, and a patch of flaky skin around his genitals. Are these normal after-effects of major surgery? I was wondering if the bumps were keyloid scars or something more serious.

Hello and thank you for contacting Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. I don't think there is anything to worry about. The discolouration of the skin was most likely caused by clipping the fur or by surgical scrub. As long as yo Moose is not bothered by it and the skin does not get red or inflamed, you should just monitor it at home. It should slowly disappear over the next few weeks
