Is an X-ray accurate for kitten hip dysplasia diagnosis at 3 months?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Maine Coon | Male | unneutered | 3 months and 4 days old

Hello. We've taken a three month age maine coon kitten and we suspect that he is suffering from hip joint dysplasia. We have got an x-ray and it looks scary, but we are not quite sure if this is an appropriate diagnostic method for kittens: maybe joints are naturally flexible at 3 months. Could you please clarify this, and say how severe is it? Thank you in advance!

Hello and thank you for contacting Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. The hips are not fully grown or developed at this age however the subluxation that is seen in both hips is definitely abnormal and is likely to cause problems with walking and jumping. I am afraid the dysplasia looks serious and Normal may need surgery in the future to maintain normal mobility.
