My dog has an eye blister. Is it alarming? Could ticks be the cause?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

My dog has a blister/stye on the top of his right eye. I'm wondering if this is something to be alarmed about. We did find several ticks on him this morning about 3 on the top of his head area. Would a flea bite cause this or something else? Last thing I want is something like a foxtail being lodged up in there and I would just like some guidance as to what it may be.

Hello and thank you for contacting Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. I suspect the blister is a corneal ulcer. Corneal ulcers are usually caused by a trauma to the eye bulb or from contact with substances (chemicals) that are very irritant to the eye. I don' think it is caused by ticks or fleas. Please, take your dog to your local vets for an appointment right away as untreated corneal lesions (regardless of the cause) can easily turn into an infected ulcer, which can be very difficult to treat.
