My dog has a red lump on her side. Is it a bruise or something else?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Chihuahua | Female | unspayed | 6 years and 1 month old | 4 lbs

My small white chihuahua has a lump on her left side near her ribs that at first I thought she bumped into something and it was just swollen but now it has a red tint to it and she is periodically licking it.

Hello and thank you for contacting Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. It does look like a large bruise. Dark, red colour of the skin is a normal feature of bruising. Please, monitor Chloe for a few days at home. Typically, a large bruise like this should decrease slowly in size and disappear in the next 5-7 days. However, if the area is painful to touch or Chloe is lethargic and not herself, you should take her to your local vets for an appointment.
