My cat has a detached claw stuck in his leg after a fight. Vet or DIY?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Domestic Shorthair | Male | neutered | 7 years and 3 months old | 10 lbs

Hello, My cat had a fight with another cat a few days ago. He spent the day hiding under the bed as was clearly scared or hurt which is very unlike him. We now have found what seems to be a detached claw stuck in his leg. Should we try and pull this out ourselves, or take him to a vet? Thanks for your help.

If the area is painful I would recommend taking him to the vet to assess underlying injuries and possible infection within the wound but if the claw is loose and stuck in the fur it may be possible to pick out without trouble. Wounds from cat bites and scratches tend to become infected so I would recommend a vet check with your regular vet tomorrow, especially if any signs of fever are present (lethargy, reduced appetite or thirst, pain, increased breathing rate).
