My cat's paw is bleeding and has a painful, thick nail. Vet or DIY?

Pet's info: Cat | Himalayan | Female | spayed | 11 years and 7 months old

I just noticed my cats paw with a claw that looks like it is bleeding. I think there are two nails. One that is actively growing and the other that is super thick (it looks like it is deep in her pad). Should I take her in or attempt to cut it on my own? When I pull a little on the thick nail she pulls back in pain.

Poor Mocha, it does look painful in the picture. I would not try to treat this at home. She may need to be sedated in order to have it cut properly. Please take her into the vet first thing in the morning. Best of luck.

If it currently bleeding you can use some corn starch to help slow the bleeding. Also if you are able to place a light bandage on it to prevent him from licking it tonight that would be good. You can also use a cone collar which you can find at your local pet store if it is still open. I would take him to your vet first thing in the morning for an exam. He may need to have it cleaned, medicated and professionally wrapped. Your vet will also be able to provide antibiotics and pain meds if need. If it is profusely bleeding then I would take him to your local emergency clinic for attention tonight. I hope this helps!

My dog has this hang nail it doesn’t seem to hurt unless I touch it should I let it fall or cut it It also has blood in it and bleeds when I touch it
Poor Amber! That nail needs to be cut, but I'd have a vet do it since it's painful for her. Take her into the vet first thing in the morning to have it done. Tonight, bandage her paw (not too tight!) to keep her from licking at it. Best of luck.

Poor Kitty. Try to apply gentle pressure to stop the bleeding. Put an Ecollar on her to keep her from licking it, as that can make it worse. You can make one at home or buy one at a pet store. Having her seen by a vet tomorrow is a good idea.

I am sorry to hear about your kitty. It is difficult to see exactly what is going on in this photo, but split toenails can be painful for sure! Most often we try to cut the nail back as far as possible. In some cases we may need to sedate a pet to remove the portion that is torn, in other instances if it is only loosely attached we can remove it with a firm tug of hemostats. In some cases we may need to prescribe pain medication and we need to monitor the nail closely for infection such as swelling of the nail bed, redness of the toe, yellow or green discharge from the nail. If the nail is painful and you aren't able to remove the split portion, a trip to your vet's office is recommended. Best of luck with Archimedes!

Oh goodness, that looks like a deep infection. It could be bacterial or fungal, but I suspect more likely bacterial. He needs to see a veterinarian for an examination and treatment plan. My dog is a chihuahua and she hurt one of her nails and it is cut up to the base and I applied styptic powder for the bleeding but her nail is halfway hanging. Should I cut the nail? She can’t even walk or step on her left back leg
I wouldn't try to cut it yourself, it looks like it's broken back to the quick. This will be extremely painful for Choco. She needs to see a vet to get sedated and have it cut. Bandage it to protect it tonight, then have her seen by a vet in the morning.

It looks like your cat’s toenail has been sheared off, probably from an injury, fight or being hit by a car. My best recommendation is to take your car to the vet where they will be able to fully clean the area around the nail, trim the nails if necessary, and give your cat an antibiotic and pain medication if needed. Hi, my 1yo DSH cat has broken her claw somehow, she isn’t showing any signs of discomfort but it is bleeding, I’m concerned for her and want to know if she needs to be taken to an after hours vet or if it can wait until the morning?
Thank you for submitting your question regarding Max. She will need to see a veterinarian as she may require antibiotics to prevent an infection in the nail bed. The veterinarian may also bandage the paw to help keep it clean. If you can stop the bleeding, she can be during normal hours in the morning. If it is bleeding excessively or will not stop, then she will need to be seen soon. You can try to apply light pressure to the wound to stop the bleeding. I hope this information helps!

My cat has a piece of his paw pad dangling off his back paw. It's not bleeding, he's not limping, not red/sore, no funny odors or anything coming from it. He walks on it just fine. Should I be worried? Is there something that I should do?
Poor Buddy! I would have him seen by a vet for this problem first thing in the morning to get treated. This piece of paw pad may need to be removed or stitched back into place. Tonight, rest him. Keep him indoors if he's allowed outside. Best of luck.

Poor Misty. It could be she has injured her paw or has an infection causing the swelling and bleeding. Unfortunately this isn't something that can be treated with OTC medications, she needs to see a vet. I would take her into a vet now to have this treated. Best of luck.
