Senior cat has frequent diarrhea. Why isn't anti-diarrhea helping?

Pet's info: Cat | American Shorthair | Male | neutered | 13 years old | 22 lbs

My 13 year old cat has been getting Diarrhea frequently. I have given him Nutri-Vet Anti-Diarrhea Liquid for Cats but it seems to help for a day and he gets Diarrhea again. I don't think it's the food he eats because he has been eating pretty much the same wet and dry food for years.

Poor Milo. This frequent diarrhea in a cat his age could be caused by stress, pancreatitis, or hyperthyroidism. Hyperthyroidism can be common in senior cats. He needs to see a vet for this problem, and I recommend getting a geriatric blood panel and urinalysis done. These tests are tailored to senior cats and look for diseases like hyperthyroidism. Once the cause of the diarrhea is found, the vet can discuss treatment options. Please take him into a vet in the next few days. I hope this helps!

    Mr. Chi may have a food indiscretion,, a gastrointestinal infection or, since he is an older kitty, he may suffer from hyperthyroidism or possibly kidney disease. You should take him to your veterinarian for an exam and blood tests. Make sure he drinks enough, as diarrhea causes him to lose a lot of fluids.

Poor Lucky! I'm glad to hear that he still seems to be acting and eating normally despite this ongoing diarrhea. Some possible causes of persistent diarrhea include parasites, inflammatory bowel disease, gastrointestinal cancers, liver disease, food allergies, among others. You can try transitioning his diet to a novel protein diet ( http://www.drsfostersmith.com/product/prod_display.cfm?pcatid=34182 ) with one protein source and one carbohydrate source to limit the ingredients that he is exposed to. Mix his old and new foods together over 5-7 days, then exclusively feed a new diet for at least 8-12 weeks to determine if the change has been effective. Also adding a probiotic ( http://www.drsfostersmith.com/product/prod_display.cfm?pcatid=21478 ) may be beneficial. However, if his diarrhea continues or worsens, Lucky will need to go to his vet for further evaluation and testing. I hope that all goes well!

Even though Mango doesn't do well with travel, I would definitely take him into a vet immediately. He will not be feeling well and is likely distressed even though he's not showing signs of it. Cats can be very stoic when ill, and think about how you would feel if you had frequent diarrhea, was losing weight, and hardly eating. He could have something serious causing his symptoms such as irritable bowl disease or cancer. He needs veterinary care now because senior cats can easily get dehydrated and frequent diarrhea is enough to cause dehydration. Please take him into an ER vet clinic; if there isn't one in your area, there will be a vet on call for emergencies. The information to reach that vet is found on a clinic's answering machine or website. Good luck, I hope this helps!

I am sorry to hear about your kitty! If the food appears different than the one he normally eats it is possible that perhaps there is a different additive or food coloring that has upset his stomach (or is it possible it is a different flavor even though the brand is the same). We can see some pets have GI upset from quick changes in diet. That being said, we can also see diarrhea from other causes, including GI parasites, bacterial overgrowth, inflammatory bowel disease, as a symptom of systemic illness, and more. If he is still energetic with no vomiting you could try getting a probiotic from your vet or the pet store for him which can sometimes help with diarrhea and feeding something bland for a few days (such as plain white rice and shredded boiled chicken or lean ground chicken) or picking up the food you normally get at the pet store and trying this for a few days. I have a cat that is 13 yrs old she has developed diarrhea and has been having accidents since Friday
The diarrhea could be caused by a number of things, parasites, infection, even being constipated will sometimes show as diarrhea initially because liquid is all that can get by the hardened fecal material. If she is eating and drinking, that's good, since cats need to eat or they will develop liver problems in a matter of days. I would get her seen by your vet as soon as possible, especially if her appetite is down, if she is lethargic, her behavior has changed, any other adverse symptoms accompanying the diarrhea. Your vet will do an exam, some lab work and based on these results will be better able tot ell you what is wrong and how best to treat it.

My cat who’s almost 11 has been experiencing diarrhea (with a very strong odor!) and were not sure if it’s due to old age and she’s a 100% indoor cat so we think that parasites are rules out. What could be causing this?
Poor Lily! Diarrhea even in old cats isn't normal. I have diagnosed parasites especially giardia in cats who are strictly indoors. You could try a sensitive stomach food and some probiotics to see if this helps. If not, I would strongly recommend your vet to take a look at her. Your vet will likely do a fecal and possibly blood work, thyroid test and x-rays. I would also make sure they rule out giardia and campylobacter. In older cats, I worry especially worry about inflammatory bowel disease and GI cancer. If your vet is concerned about this, they will be able to talk to you about potential diagnostics (Ultrasound and GI panel, etc) and treatments to help her feel better. I hope this helps and she starts to feel better soon!

Chronic diarrhea in an older cat with vomiting can be a sign of an inflammatory bowel disease or intestinal cancer. The only way to differentiate between the two disease is a surgery to take biopsies of the intestines and have them analyzed. Based on the diagnosis, the diet may be changed or vitamin supplements or steroids may be added to manage her symptoms. They will check for parasite and check her labs for any renal or endocrine disease

Hello my cat has been having periodic spouts of diarrhea and been loosing weight over the past few month, this started shortly after their food was changed, I've changed it back because i was worried, what can I do to help him, he's 9 years old still
If this was caused by a food change I would expect him to be back to normal by now. There may be something else underlying going on here that is the cause of Zebco's diarrhea and weight loss, such as intestinal parasites, pancreatic disease, diabetes, or even thyroid disease. I would recommend taking him to your vet for a through examination and potential tests (bloodwork, fecal exam), to hopefully identify the underlying problem so that he is treated appropriately. In the meantime I would suggest feeding Zebco a bland diet of boiled plain chicken and rice or cottage cheese to help settle his stomach a bit. You can also try adding 1-2 tsp of canned pumpkin (not the pie filling) in his food daily to add fiber and help harden the stools up. Best wishes with Zebco and I hope he feels better soon.

Loss of appetite and diarrhea can be observed with many conditions such as gastroenteritis, dietary indiscretion, kidney disease, pancreatitis, among many other possibilities. I recommend that you have Otto evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. They would be able to check for these possibilities and others depending on the findings on exam.
