My dog has a sudden lump after heartworm treatment. Should I worry?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

My German Shepard has always been on heart worm prevention but she was heart worm positive and had to have the treatment 2 weeks ago. Well she had been doing really good but today I noticed a lump on her right hip down from the injection site. It literally grew within a day because it was not there yesterday. My vet had already closed for the day so I’m hoping to find some answers on here. She doesn’t act like it is painful. I don’t know if it would be related to the treatment?Insect bite?Tumor?

Hello. It would be very unusual to get a injection site reaction 2 weeks later, & for it to be down from the original injection site. My guess is this might be a benign fatty lump called a lipoma, so just schedule a visit with your veterinarian at your earliest convenience to check this out. If your dog is an older pet, then lipomas can be quite common. Hopefully, that is all it is & she should be just fine ( but I am sorry she was heartworm positive ). Thanks for contacting Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach.
