I had to give my do hydrogen peroxide to induce vomiting since he ate a grape. The vet said to give him 3 tablespoons but giving it to him I was having trouble measuring exactly. Is it possible I have too much and it could be harmful? He has now stopped vomiting and is acting normal.

I'm glad that your vet recommended that Charlie vomit up the grape that he'd eaten. The biggest challenge with grape ingestion is that there is no known "safe" amount. With this type of potential toxicity, some dogs can experience acute kidney failure after eating just one grape, while others can be perfectly fine after eating a bunch. As far as using hydrogen peroxide to induce vomiting, some studies have shown that there can be considerable damage and irritation to the esophagus and stomach due to hydrogen peroxide. Generally, I do not recommend using it for this reason. I understand that it's really challenging to measure and force-feed this substance, so it's really easy to give a little extra. Since Charlie has not stopped vomiting and is acting normally, odds are very good that he'll be absolutely fine. Just keep a close eye on him for changes in his overall demeanor, appetite, vomiting, hard swallowing (gulping not associated with eating or drinking), or any other concerns. If problems arise, be sure to take him to your vet, but again, odds are very much in your favor. I hope that everything goes well!

Hello. We generally recommend 1 ml of peroxide per pound, with the maximum amount being 45 mls. This would be 3 tablespoons. If your dog truly weighs only 27 pounds, then I would not give any more peroxide. If Charlie does not vomit within 20 minutes of administering the peroxide, then you can take him in to your vet so another medication can be given to induce vomiting. But if all he ate was 1 grape, then he should be just fine. Just watch him for the next 2-3 days for indications of illness, including loss of appetite, vomiting & lethargy. If he remains bright & alert, no problems eating or drinking, then the one grape did not harm him & he will be fine. Any concerns, just see your vet tomorrow for followup.
