Is DNA test kit buffer fluid dangerous for my cat if exposed?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Domestic Shorthair | Male | neutered | 5 years old | 10.5 lbs

Is the buffer fluid that comes in DNA testing kits dangerous for cats ? Specifically the 23 and me test kit? For example if I performed the test outside of my home away from my pet could I still potentially poison him if I got some of the fluid on me ?

Hello. Buffer solutions consist of a weak acid & its complimentary base. It could be toxic & cause severe gastrointestinal problems if large amounts are swallowed, but if only a small drop were to be ingested, Salem's stomach acids would render the solution inactive. If he were to ingest a capful or two, this might promote some injury, but certainly not if you got a few drops on your skin. Thanks for contacting Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach.
