Why is my dog licking his neutered area? Is it fleas or an infection?

My dog was neutered 6 months ago and I’m noticing him licking himself a lot in the area today and it’s also a little red. It looks like it’s a little sore. We recently had another dog in our house that had fleas and we have been treating our dogs for fleas since the dog has left. Could the sore possibly be from fleas, or is there another issue we should be worried about?

Poor Shiloh, I see what you mean about the sore. Yes, this could be due to the fleas. I would put a cone on him to keep him from licking the area. You can get one at a pet store if you don't already have one. Keep an eye on the sore and if it gets worse or appears infected, then I would have him seen by a vet. I hope this helps!

It is concerning that there is white stuff coming out of Filos' incision, and that could be pus which is a sign of infection. I would put the cone back on him for now, and have him seen by a vet in the morning. If the incision is infected, the vet can prescribe him antibiotics to treat the infection.

Our male puppy was neutered 3 months ago, now he is constantly licking where the incision sight would be. The area is slightly swollen and peach. Any idea what could cause this?
Hello. It is possible that there is still some underlying suture material trying to breakdown & dissolve. This could be causing some local inflammation. I would place an Elizabethan cone on him to prevent licking until you can have your veterinarian examine the area. It may do fine if you can keep him from licking, but this might also benefit from some topical therapy. Your veterinarian will know what to do once he has a chance to evaluate things. Dog neutered but other dog licked scab off
Poor pup! That area is very inflamed and may be infected. Keep the dogs separated and make sure your dog wears his elizabethan collar at all times. Get him seen by his veterinarian within the next 24 hours as he may need antibiotics. Make sure to keep him from any activity as well such as running or jumping. Our dog was neutered on Tuesday. Today is day 5 post surgery. Our dog was left unattended for about 3 hours and he managed to get his e-collar off and has been licking it for hours. It is reddened and possibly a tad bit bleeding. It also didn’t help
It is just red from him licking it. It looks fine. Just be sure to get the cone on him so that he cannot remove it. Typically lacing it through the collar and putting the collar on tight enough that you can only get two fingers between it and the neck will prevent them from removing it. I suggest you get this wound spray gel to put on it until healed. This should keep it from getting infected. https://www.petco.com/shop/en/petcostore/product/vetericyn-plus-antimicrobial-wound-and-skin-hydrogel-for-pets I would not be worry about him getting it wet, that will not dissolve the sutures.

My male 3year old dog has been excessively licking his penis and now there are sores that are starting to look infected. He isn’t neutered and still very active. Any advice or home remedies that you can suggest would be appreciated
This looks like scrotal dermatitis, which is not uncommon in unneutered dogs. Often, there is an infection present, which will need prescription medication to treat it. This particular problem tends to take a long time to heal and can get worse without proper treatment. For these reasons I recommend taking Dexter to the vet for an accurate diagnosis and treatment. For now, wash/spray the area with cool, clean water (no soap or other antiseptics) for at least 5 minutes at a time. Do this at least twice a day. It's important not to put any ointments or creams on this, because they will likely be licked off and may not be helpful anyways. I hope that helps and Dexter gets better soon.

Ouch! Poor Dylan! This looks like a little local infection that he has been licking. I would place an e-collar I him to prevent licking. You can clean it with mild soap and water. And I would also put some neosporin on it twice a day. If it is not improving in the next day or two then I would definitely take him in to see your veterinarian for an exam. Your vet will be able to prescribe some oral anabiotics and some stronger topical medicine if needed. If at any point he is not eating or is lethargic then I would also take him to your vet. Hello. If you have a Petco or other animal supply store near you, take your pet in to see if they can fit him with a more suitable collar. He probably needs a longer one. Once you are sure he can no longer lick or bite the area, you can apply a very thin layer of antibiotic ointment (neosporin) to the area 2-3 times a day...but only if he cannot lick it.

This could initially have been flea bites which irritated him and made him lick the area. He may have damaged the skin through licking and now there may be a bacterial skin infection. I think the appointment with your vet on the 10th August is too long to wait, as bacterial infections can spread very fast. Try getting an appointment in the next few days telling them that you think there is an infection. If the vet cannot accommodate you, try another vet. Your dog will likely need either antibiotic ointment or oral prescription antibiotics if there is a bacterial skin infection. If you happen to have an e-collar at home, you should put it on your dog to prevent him from licking the area.

It does not look infected but it does look like it may open if he continues to lick. You need to get him a cone collar to stop him from licking. You can put some Neosporin on the incision twice a day. just wanted to know if this incision was normal or if it got infected. keela has a cone on but i’m afraid he was able to lick it at night while i was sleeping. he’s able to lick even with the cone on, it’s just more difficult for him.
Thank you for submitting your question regarding Keela. The incision site appears intact. The redness and bruising mainly seems to involve the surrounding skin. It is unlikely infected at this time, but I worry that it will become so if he continues to lick. I recommend trying a larger size collar on him so that he cannot access the surgical site.
