Dog constipated on Clavamox for anal gland abscess. What should I do?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Small (up to 22lb) | Male | unneutered | 17 lbs

My dog has been on clavamox for almost a week for an anal gland abscess, and only pooped 2 times in the past 6 days. He still eats his food and only drank water a couple times this past week. What should I do next?

Hello, I'm sorry to hear about Simba's anal gland abscess. If he is eating well, behaving normally, and the stool he has passed is normal, then this may be a normal part of his healing. Antibiotics can cause mild changes in the gastrointestinal system. The pain of the abscess can also make pets hold their stool for longer during their healing period. If he is acting poorly, not eating well, and is experiencing other signs such as vomiting or diarrhea, this would warrant a recheck with your veterinarian today. I hope this is helpful.
