My dog saw a toad. Are all toads toxic to dogs, or just specific ones?

I was taking my dog out and noticed a small toad on the porch. Are all toads toxic or just certain ones? I snapped a picture of it and tried to keep my dog away from it.

Some toads are toxic to dogs and usually what you will see is neurological signs (as you described). If she had been a smaller dog she may not have survived.... I don't know if you have these toxic species in Canada so you will have to do some research. If the toad was toxic, you’d see symptoms such as head shaking, severe drooling, and pawing at the mouth and eyes almost immediately. Because it’s been 10 minutes since Max picked up the toad, I would suspect it’s not poisonous. I would not rush him into the ER vet, but keep an eye on him to be safe. If you do see the signs I listed, then take him to the vet right away. Hopefully, he should be fine. I hope this helps, best of luck!

My dog just had a toad in his mouth will he be Ok? I live in South Dakota and it was just a regular toad that I see all the time.
Hi there and thank you for using Pet Coach! From the picture you posted it does not appear that the toad is a Colorado River Toad or a Marine Toad, which are two of the most common toads we see that cause toxicity. I would make sure you rinse Cash's mouth out really well with a garden hose and monitor him after to make sure he does not develop sores in his mouth or other symptoms such as lethargy, seizures, neurological side effects, etc. If he does develop strange symptoms, I would get him examined by your veterinarian to be on the safe side. My 9 year old purple came nose to nose with a baby toad for a sec or two in my yard.. Should I be concerned?
No concern here. There is no danger to your pet unless he actually placed the toad in his mouth. In which case, you would see immediate discomfort by Tucker in the form of excessive salivation and pawing at the mouth. And that will occur only if the toad was one of the poisonous ones (i.e. Bufo toad). Otherwise, Tucker will be just fine. : )

Is it bad if my dog ate or licked an american toad?!
Sometimes it can be bad, but it really depends. They can secrete a toxin that is irritating and sometimes toxic, but it depends on the species and how scared they are at that time (they secrete the toxin more when they are scared). You would know if he got any toxin, because they usually start drooling and constantly licking within a couple of minutes of getting the toxin. If you see this, then wash his mouth out with water using a hose for 5 minutes. The toxin can also make them hallucinate, so he may act a little off; but if he acts very lethargic or has tremors, then he should go to the vet immediately for monitoring and treatment. Not likely. She may foam at the mouth and experience some stomach upset. Rinse her mouth with cool water for at least 15 minutes. Monitor for lethargy, drooling, ataxia (wobbly gait) or tremors. The most toxic toads in the US are the Cane Toad and Colorado River Toad.

Samson had a large wood house toad in his mouth. Now he is throwing up white foam. Is that kind of toad poisonous to dogs? What should I do?
Some toads are poisonious/noxious to dogs. Typically they cause an acute reaction of excessive drooling and foaming at the mouth. This usually resolves within 30-60 minutes. If after this amount of time Samson is still acting abnormal you may want to take him in to the vet to be checked out.

My dog had a toad in her mouth for 2-3seconds. Her mouth did foam and there was a lot of head shaking but it has stopped.
Peita should be just fine! Depending on the type of toad, they can have some toxins on their outer surface that taste awful so predators will spit them out if they try to eat them (which sounds exactly like what happened with Peita). Once the source (i.e. the toad) is removed so is the taste. So you do not need to worry!

My dog caught a toad and since then she has been heaving and shaking, but she has currently stopped. Should I still contact my vet?
Rinse her mouth with cool water for at least 15 minutes. Monitor for vomiting, diarrhea, disorientation, difficulty breathing or swelling in/around the mouth. Seek veterinary attention if you see any of these symptoms. Garden toads aren't as dangerous/toxic as Marine toads (found in Florida), but can still cause foaming at the mouth, drooling and oral irritation.

Certain toads (Marine Toad or Colorado River Toad) can be toxic if bitten of ingested. You should rinse Ash's mouth out with cool water for at least 15 minutes. Monitor for excessive drooling, redness or swelling in and around her mouth, increased heart rate or ataxia (wobbly gait). Frogs are less toxic than toads and may cause nothing more serious than some drooling and minor stomach upset.
