Is it safe to neuter my senior cat at a local animal shelter?

Pet's info: Cat | American Shorthair | Male | 12 lbs

I found out that our local animal shelter neuters and spays pets. My cat McDougall has never been neutered and he is in his mid teens. If I have him operated on at the shelter can I be reasonably sure he won't go into shock or harmed in any way if I have him neuted there?

Thank you for contacting Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach with your question about McDougall. Neutering a cat is a quick and safe procedure. Shelter vets are extremely experienced in neutering cats, as they will do it on a daily basis. It is very rare for there to be problems. He should be just fine getting it done at the shelter. Thanks for using Boop by Petco! Usually neuter surgeries go without complications although like with any surgeries animals can have complications from being under anesthesia. It is recommended to avoid him getting to the incision to avoid delayed healing. You can do this by using an e-collar which you can obtain from your veterinarian or local pet store. Sometimes non-steroidal anti-inaflammarory drugs are used for a few days after surgery. Good luck!

Thanks for using Boop by Petco! This depends on the clinic that you go to. I would highly recommend that you contact the clinic you are planning to go so that they can give you a more exact estimate. You can also contact your local humane society as they sometimes offer spay clinics that are less expensive. Best of luck!

I want to give more info on a question i just asked. Harley has a appointment tomorrow morning to be nutered at a low cost clinic they ssid he could be vaccinated the same time I think it will be too much for him what do you think?
Thanks for using Boop by Petco! I think this would be ok. In general, it is better to space it out just because both of these procedures (neuter surgery and vaccines) can result in complications or side effects, often times we do them close to each other or at the same time due to logistics and most cats do just fine. Thanks for using Boop by Petco! He could potentially undergo anesthesia. It is just a matter of being careful with the amount of time that he is under anesthesia and keeping it to a minimum and to watch that his blood pressure does not drop in the process. A castration is so quick that I would not be too concerned about this. I would recommend IV fluids all throughout the procedure. Best of luck!

Doing neutered my male cat is risky?is there any risk or bad effect to do neutered?
A trained vet doctor performing a cat neuter is very safe. Cats are actually much safer than dogs to neuter. In order to make sure Vanilla doesn't feel the surgery, he will be given anesthesia. Anesthesia always has some level of risk, but again, in the hands of a trained vet doctor, the anesthesia is very safe. I hope that helps and I hope all is well with Vanilla.

My kitties are getting neutered Tuesday but both are fighting a URI. Is it safe to proceed, or should I reschedule.

I would keep the appointment and have your veterinarian proceed with an examination and determine if it would be safe to proceed with the procedure or not. The Vetco clinics at PetCo don’t do neutering surgery. They do healthy pet vaccinations, deworming and can test him for feline leukemia and feline aids. They can also insert a microchip. Hello. There really is no maximum age. He is likely starting to mature into an adult, so his appearance and behavior may start to change soon. If not neutered, his face will fatten, he may start marking with urine and may have some territorial aggression. Thank you for your questions about Casper. Having him castrated (spaying is term for female animal but I know what you mean), is generally considered a safe and routine procedure although any procedure carries risks. Castrating a male cat will decrease the tendency to roam, fight and spray his urine. By decreasing these behaviors, there is a decrease in these castrated cats to get abscesses, Feline Leukemia viral infections, Feline Immunodeficiency viral infections and they are less likely to be hit by cars or attacked by other animals as they are staying closer to home. The males typically stop spraying which most pet owners appreciate. Most males will also stop having sex but some may still exhibit the behavior. I recommend to speak with your veterinarian about risks with the procedure. I hope this answers your questions. Please feel free to post any additional questions!

I would just make sure you fast him for the procedure. Pick up any food after 10pm on Friday night. Male cats do typically well and they usually do fine. Just monitor for licking the area and any swelling or discharge but again they typically do very well. If he does lick at the area after the procedure I would just call your veterinarian.
