Dog back pain, tight stomach, tiny BMs after vet. Should I worry?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Dachshund (Miniature Smooth Haired) | Male | 11 lbs

I took my dog to the vet for back pain and a tight stomach. He's a 6 year old mini dachshund. They gave him a cortisone shot and sent him home with a steroid for pain. But his stomach seems to be getting worse and they didn't seem to address it at all. Should I be worried and take him to another vet, or is it linked to the back pain? He's eating and drinking like normal but having tiny bms.

It is not uncommon in spinal cases to have altered toileting (constipation/difficulty urinating/poor control) - the nerves which control these functions also originate in the spine and can be equally affected, also squatting can be painful in itself. As long as he is able to toilet I would monitor closely over 24-48hours to ensure he is responding to the medication otherwise additional symptomatic treatment may also be required
