My dog ate Benadryl cream. Will he be okay? What should I do now?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Shih Tzu | Male | unneutered | 12 lbs

My 12 lb, almost 3 year old, shih-tzu dog chewed on a tube of Benadryl cream with the 2 active ingredients being diphenhydramine hydrochloride 2% (topical analgesic) and zinc acetate 0.1% (skin protectant). He got into it 2-3 hours ago and hasn’t been acting abnormally. He’s had a lot of water to drink. Is there anything I should do/is he okay?

Hello. Thank you for the excellent pictures. It really helps to see what has happened. There really does not look like Leo could have ingested enough of the ointment to cause any problems at all. My guess is he discovered that the ointment was pretty yucky & left things alone. Based on your pictures, he will be perfectly fine & there is nothing to worry about. Thanks for contacting Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach.
