My young dog limps after running and rest. Is it just arthritis?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | BullBoxer | Female | 3 years and 3 months old | 50 lbs

Frankie was diagnosed with arthritis by our vet a few months ago. She was given vetprofen to deal with the pain, but I'm not convinced that all she has is arthritis. She's only 3- boxer-amstaff mix. Symptoms: Runs, but running turns into hobbling after awhile. After laying down, she has trouble putting weight on the leg. It improves after she's been walking for a few minutes. Recently, she sometimes will not put her foot all the way to the floor when leg is sore.

Hi, in my opinion it sounds like Frankie could have potentially injured her cruciate ligaments. This would be a potential diagnosis provided the lameness seem to affect just one of her legs. If both legs should be affected, and she should be hopping like a bunny it could be that she is suffering with hip dysplasia. I would recommend to have Frankie rechecked. I hope this helps and that all goes well !
