Why is my cat's chin bloody, swollen, and missing fur but acts normal?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Domestic Shorthair | Female | spayed | 1 year and 3 months old | 8 lbs

My cat Wonky has some fur missing under her chin and the fur around it is a little bloody. Maybe a bit of swelling. She's eating, drinking, urinating, pooing, acting all normal. She hangs out in my screened-in patio a few hours a day. No sign of puncture or puss. Of her siblings, she's the only one that often gets small red spots around her face. Don't know if that's related. Sorry for blurry pictures; she kept moving (The bump in 1st picture all the way down by her neck is my thumb)

Hello and thank you for contacting Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. As long as the skin is intact and the area is not painful to touch and is not getting more swollen, you should monitor Wonky at home. I suspect the missing fur could be self-inflicted from scratching or it is an abrasion from trauma. In this case, Wonky will just need some time for the fur to grow back. However, if the neck becomes painful, swollen, hot to touch you should take Wonky to your local vets for an appointment as the symptoms would suggest trauma to the deeper structures of the neck or a growing abscess.
