My cat has a red, possibly infected bump on his neck. Is it serious?

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Male | unneutered | 6 lbs

I was petting my cat and found a weird bump on his skin on his neck. It seems to be only skin deep but seems like it’s not bothering him too much. However, it looks like it’s red and possibly infected. Any ideas what it could be? I will he taking him to the vet Monday but I’d like some peace of mind. Also, if you believe it is an emergency I could take him to the emergency vet tomorrow! Thanks.

This may be a cyst, a benign growth, or even a small abscess. It should be checked out by a vet, but it's not an emergency. You can take him into the vet on Monday. The vet can diagnose what is causing it and can treat it. Best of luck.

Hi and thank you for using Boop by Petco. I cannot tell where the lump is on the photo but most if not all lumps needs to be evaluated by a vet. Especially in Simba's case since the lump has gotten swollen. Your vet will perform a full physical exam and determine if the lump needs to be aspirated. Lumps can be anything from an abscess, mass/growth, hernia etc. Your vet will determine after an exam what the next best steps and treatments are. Good luck!

My cat had a bump on his forehead. I just took a pic if you want to see it? I'm not sure what it is.
Thanks for including the picture of Simba and his bump. He is a handsome boy! It's possible that he scratched that area leading to trauma to the skin and the swelling. If there are other cats in the home or he's allowed outside, it could be caused by a fight with another animal. I would clean the area with warm water and antiseptic soap, and then monitor it. Should it get bigger or not go away, I would have Simba seen by a vet.

My cat has a big bump by his neck, should I be concerned? It doesn’t seem to bother him when we touch it.
Thanks for using Boop by Petco! This could be a benign or malignant growth. This may even be an abscess. There is no way of knowing what it is just based on its appearance. This is often differentiated by a test called a fine needle aspirate (FNA) which is a pain free, inexpensive and easy procedure which in most cases will help reach a diagnosis. Sometimes a biopsy is needed for a definitive diagnosis. I recommend that you have him evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. I am really hoping for something benign. My indoor cat is ten months old and recently I noticed a hard, red bump on her neck. What is it and what can I do??
Thank you for submitting your question regarding your cat. I recommend that she sees her veterinarian. She could have an infection on or under her skin. If this is not the case, then she could have a mass that has grown. In this case, she would need a procedure known as a fine needle aspirate. The veterinarian would use a small needle to collect a sample of cells to evaluate under the microscope. This will help to diagnose the mass and determine if surgical removal is necessary. Whats this red bump?
Thank you for attaching a picture of Leo's bump! It could be from an injury, such as him scratching his chin and accidentally cutting himself. I would keep an eye on it for now. If it doesn't go away in the next few days, gets bigger, there is pus from the area, and/or it starts to bother him, take him into the vet. Best of luck.

Thanks for using Boop by Petco! I'm sorry to hear Ringo has a wound on his neck. Based on your picture, it does look like he might have a skin infection of some kind, even possibly from a ruptured abscess. Does he go outside? I would recommend having him evaluated by his regular veterinarian to have area clipped, cleaned, and assessed to determine what may be going on, and what treatment (antibiotics, anti-inflammatories, or possible surgical repair) may be needed to resolve it. If he goes outside and the wound may have come from an unknown animal, I would also recommend his rabies vaccine be boostered as well. Good luck!

My cat has a small red bump that almost looks like a scabbed over pimple. It doesn’t seem like it hurts her, but I wanted to know if should bring her to the vet
Hello there, Thanks for the good photo. If it is a small minor wound like a pimple or scratch, it should be mostly healed within a week of forming. If its been present for longer than that or is worsening, I would be more concerned that it is the start of an infection or growth that would benefit from being seen by her veterinarian. My cat a white and skin colored lump on his face that was tiny and has now grown a bit, is that serious?
This may be an abscess, a cyst or a tumor. You should have it examined by your veterinarian, as it is not possible to distinguish these by just looking at a photo. An abscess can usually be treated with antibiotics and/or be lanced, and a cyst can be evacuated. To identify a tumor, your vet may want to do a fine needle aspirate (he takes some material from the bump with a needle and then looks at it under the microscope) to determine whether the mass is concerning.

My 11 month old male cat. Has an irregular shaped lump in the middle of his abdomen that I can feel. Is this something I should about?
I would definitely have this lump checked out by a vet, as it could be a cyst or a benign tumor. Any suspicious lumps should be examined by the vet. The vet can perform a test called a fine needle aspirate on it. To do this, the vet sticks a small needle into the lump to get a sample of it's cells, and examines the cells on a slide under a microscope. It's usually painless to the animal, and relatively quick to perform. I would have Simba seen by a vet tomorrow to have this lump examined and diagnosed so it can be treated if needed.
