Can I add water to my cat's amoxicillin powder for bladder infection?

My vet hospital sent me home with amoxicillin for my cat. She has a bladder infection. But it’s still in powder form, not reconstituted. They are closed and my cat is really uncomfortable. Can I add liquid safely?

Thank you for contacting Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach with your question about Macy and for providing pictures, it's very helpful. Yes, you can add water to it. You will need to add the correct amount of water to it in order to make the solution. For a 15ml size bottle, add 12ml of water. For a 30ml bottle, which is what I suspect you may have but check the bottle to be safe, add 23ml of water. I hope this helps!

No, I do not recommend giving your kitten human amoxicillin. The reason for this is two-fold. If you have liquid amoxicillin, it needs to be used within 10 days of being opened. Any leftover should be discarded or returned to your pharmacy for disposal. The second reason is a 3 lb kitten would use an extremely small dose compared to a human. What seems to be UTI in cats are in 99% of the time a condition which is actually a bladder inflammation, it's not an infection and for this reason it is not treated with antibiotics. it is treated with special prescription diet for urinary problems, anti inflammatories and other supplements such as Cystophan. the cause of this condition is usually due to stress, so you might want to check this out as well.

Thank you for submitting your question regarding your kitten. Amoxicillin is a medication with a wide dosing range. I can understand your confusion with the package though. I would recommend following your veterinarian's dosing for now, but be sure to follow up with the prescribing doctor to double check. You should be able to call the office and have someone check for you. This will give you piece of mind. I hope this information helps!

My vast has another uti and I have amoxidrops 250mg/5ml but I can't read what the dosage anymore and my syringe is in ml. Can you help me to give him the right dose please?
I suggest you call your veterinarian who has supplied the amoxidrops, and tell him you do not remember the dosage. He may have adjusted the dosage specifically for your cat and has a record of it in the files. I am sure the tech on the phone can look it up and tell you. I am afraid we are not allowed to give dosages unless we have a patient owner/pet/veterinary relationship and have seen your animal in person.

Aw, handsome boy! I'm sorry he's having some issues. While I wouldn't say its dangerous to give clavamox and orbax together, I don't recommend that you do that without talking to your vet about doing a urine culture, to identify for certain what bacteria are present and what medications will kill the bacteria. Treating without knowing whether the additional antibiotic is necessary could lead to bacteria becoming resistant to those medications. Ensure that he IS ABLE to urinate and pass urine, as male cats tend to have very small urethras and could get an obstruction in their urethras from inflammation of the tissue and crystalline and mucoid debris in the urine. Occasionally, stones may form in the bladder and can also cause obstruction in the urethra. If your vet didn't do an Xray, you may want to talk to your vet about doing that if the problem persists. Azithromycin disolves very badly in water, you should speak to your vet or pharmacist about adjusting her prescription for a suspension/syrup which is formulated as a liquid and diluted appropriately so as to retain activity

He should be examined by a vet before giving any medication, especially if he is not eating. He may have an infection but a vet should look at him first to decide if Amoxicillin is the best antibiotic to use. He may also need some fluids to prevent dehydration. Please call your vet and have him examined. Your vet can check a urine sample to look for an infection or other diseases that can cause blood in the urine. Hope he feels better soon!

My cat was prescribed 50 mg amoxicillin but the pharmacy gave me 250 mg capsules. how do I safely dose this?
You cannot if they are capsules. It is best to return to the pharmacy and get the correct dosage. If they don't have the correct size in capsules then they can give you a liquid that can be dosed properly.

Any tips or tricks on how to feed a cat antibiotics (amoxicillin liquid form) for a cat? Everytime I try, she moves her head and I'm not sure she's getting it all?
Thank you for using Boop by Petco! You can try mixing Sushi's antibiotics with a small amount of canned food or plain boiled chicken and trying to feed it to her. There is also a product known as "Pill Pockets" that you can squeeze the antibiotic into. I hope this helps and that all is well with Sushi!

Hi there. I am sorry to hear that Taz is not feeling well. Yes, you can certainly syringe some water into her. That is no problem. Do not use anything but water and if she struggles too much I would stop. You don't want to get anything down her trachea and if she struggles, that might happen. I agree with your vet about stopping the Amoxicillin and I am glad you are taking in her for an exam tomorrow. At 15 years old there are many things that could be going on with her and I hope that you guys can figure it out and get her started on the appropriate treatment tomorrow. Best wishes to you guys.
