Pet's info: Dog | American Pit Bull Terrier | Female | spayed | 70 lbs
Hello, I have a question regarding morphine. I took my dog to our local ER clinic. She had internal bleeding from her spleen. Her cancer had spread to the heart area so surgery was not an option. The vet suggested euthanasia. I choose to take her home. The vet offered to give her something for pain. It seemed like a lot to me. A few hours later my dog was dead. My question is what is the does for a 70lb dog?

Hello and thank you for contacting Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. I am very sorry to hear about Nina. The dose of morphine ranges from 0.05mg/lb for mild pain to over 0.3mg/lb for severe pain. A high dose of morphine for Nina would be around 15-20mg . At this dose morphine in dogs rarely causes respiratory problems or drop in blood pressure as it happens in human patients.
