My dog has a red irritated spot he keeps licking. Should I see a vet?

Pet's info: Dog | Golden Retriever | Male | unneutered | 1 year and 8 months old | 30 lbs

Large red irritated spot, not to sure what it is. Seems to be bothering him he keeps licking the spot. Do you think it’s anything to be worried about or should I leave it be and see if it heals on it’s own.

Thank you for contacting Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach with your question about Buddy and for providing pictures, they are very helpful. I would be worried about it, it's obviously bothering him and the licking will be making it worse. Without seeing him in person, I can't say what is causing it. I do think he needs to see a vet for it. The vet can diagnose what it causing it and can treat it. I would take him into the vet in the morning. I hope this helps!

Thanks for using Boop by Petco! This looks very irritated. The first thing is to make sure he is not licking at it as that will make it worse. If he is, I would recommend that you use an e-collar to prevent further licking. You may use A + D ointment or Desitin to soothe the irritation until he sees his veterinarian tomorrow. I just noticed a redness spot wondering if it’s from excessive licking.
Thanks for using Boop by Petco! This looks like a focal infection. It could be in theory due to excessive licking. You can try to use a medicated shampoo containing chlorhexidine twice weekly for 2 weeks. If there is no improvement or in the meantime this appears to be getting worse, have her evaluated by a veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. Good luck and have a good night!

Does he need to be taken in to the vet? This is a spot he kept biting and licking. If not vet what can I do to relieve the pain?
Hello, and thanks for using Boop by Petco. It seems your photo didn't attach; if you could post your question again with a photo that would help us give better input. However, if Percy is consistently biting and licking at one particular spot, he should be taken in to the vet to determine why. Dogs will typically bite and lick out of either pain or persistent itchiness, or occasionally anxiety, so it's best to have the vet determine what the cause (and correct treatment) is.

Chico has developed a round spot on back knee that he keeps licking. All hair gone off of it and red looking. Keeps adding to the size of it because of licking. What to use on it......hydrocortisone??? May harm the dog. anything else??
Thanks for using Boop by Petco! This is possibly due to allergies. It really comes down to figuring out what is causing his allergies so that they can be treated or the specific allergen avoided. A secondary infection is likely and also needs to be addressed. There are many things that can cause allergies though in most cases they can be broken down into 3 big categories: flea, food and environmental allergies. Allergies are usually worked up in a stepwise fashion starting with flea allergies as this is the easiest and cheapest to take care of. If not on a flea preventative, then it would be a good idea to get started on one. If already on one then it would be a good idea to change to something else (there are many new products out in the market). If not improved in 1-3 months then it is time to move on and check for food allergies by switching to a novel diet (new protein and new carbohydrate). If that does not seem to be the issue then you are left out having to check for envir

Hi Today I noticed that Eli licked her belly ( once or twice ) I checked it now I realized the spot is red
The picture is not clear enough to see exactly what is going on with Eli's skin. I would recommend a veterinarian because it may be a hotspot starting which can get drastically worse very quickly. I would recommend an ecollar if she continues to lick. Thank you for using Boop by Petco.

Nicco had a full bath and groom on Sunday. On Tuesday, I noticed him licking his behind and it looked a little red. I couldn't get an appointment for this weekend. Does it need to be looked at immediately or can it wait for the following week?
Hello. Thank you for using Boop by Petco! Sorry that Nico is having this issue. I think this can wait. It is hard to tell from the photo but I think it looks like he might have gotten some razor burn which irritated him. The irritation has caused him to lick at it which has made it worse. He has this awful swollen sore he licks constantly only 2 - 3 months old sore won’t go away
I highly recommend bringing Boo to a veterinarian. This needs to be cleaned up and most likely needs antibiotics. I am concerned because in the picture it looks like a growth and if that is the case it is recommended to remove it. Thank you for using Boop by Petco.

Thanks for using Boop by Petco! This is likely an infection possibly due to allergies. If you are able to it would be best to have him evaluated before that time as this is likely causing her to be in discomfort. Otherwise, this is not an emergency and can likely wait until Saturday. In the meantime, before seeing your veterinarian try to get an e-collar to prevent her from licking at it and causing more trauma. You can find an e-collar at your local pet store. Best of luck!

My friend dog has a red, raw spot. We shaved her hair short and have web bathing her with Veternery clinical shampoo antiseptic anrifungal shampoo. She is taking 2 baths a week. Is there something else we should do? We also put an Advantiz treatment

Hi, thanks for using Boop by Petco! Poor Lee! Based on your photo is appears to be either a pyoderma (skin infection) or a hot spot (superficial skin infection). Because it is getting worse quickly, make an appointment tomorrow to get your Vet to look at ti. They will likely prescribe antibiotics, something for the itch, and maybe a topical. Good luck!
