My small dog is constipated. How long does Miralax take to work?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Shih Tzu | Male | neutered | 7 years and 5 months old | 12 lbs

My dog went to the vet for not pooping everyday. They told me to try Miralax first so I am. I gave 1/4th of teaspoon since he’s a small dog. How long does it take to see results from Miralax in a small dog? Thank you

Hello and thank you for contacting Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. It usually takes 24-48hrs to work. If Romeo will not have gone to the toilet in the next 24hrs, you should get in touch with your vet and possibly book him in for enema.

Micralax should work straight away (or at least in 2-3 hours from administration). If constipation persists, I would recommend another immediate check up as abnormal dilation of the colon may be affecting him and specific medication to stimulate motility may be needed.

Hello. Generally, you give the 1/4 tsp every 12 hours until a soft, manageable stool is produced. As long as she is eating, I would give this another 48 hours to see if she produces a stool. If not, you will need to see the veterinarian for professional help & perhaps a stronger laxative. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach.
