Why is my senior cat itchy on his back with dark fur flakes?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Male | neutered | 16 years and 6 months old | 11 lbs

Hi, my elder cat has seemed a bit itchy and sensitive on his back toward his tail. I haven't seen any evidence of fleas and he is an indoor cat living with no other pets. When I was brushing him recently, some of his fur came out with something dark on the ends of the fur. It doesn't look like flea dirts to me. What could this be?

Hello and thank you for contacting Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. Excessive skin itching is that area can be related to anal glands impaction or to allergic reaction. I suspect the black material on the hair is a bit of dandruff or a flake of epidermis - most likely it is not significant. Please, get Pete seen by your local vets after the weekend to check his anal glands and to start him on anti-allergic treatment, if necessary.
