My dog's eyelid is swollen, but her eye looks okay. What should I do?

My dog has a swollen eyelid. We have no idea what happened. The actual eye appears fine, and I don’t see any discharge. Any advice?

Thank you for contacting Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach with your question about Elenor and for providing pictures, they are very helpful. I see what you mean about the swelling. It could be from an injury or from an allergic reaction. Try putting a cold compress on it for five minutes at a time a couple of times a day to see if that helps the swelling. If it doesn't help by Monday, it gets bigger, or you start to see an eye discharge, then I would take her into the vet. I hope this helps!

Hello. This could be some type of allergic reaction. Apply a warm compress to the area twice a day for 10-15 minutes at a time. You will need to keep the water quite warm, but not uncomfortable. If the swelling does not go down by tomorrow, please make an appointment to see your veterinarian on Monday. Hopefully, the swelling will resolve by then. Thanks for using Boop by Petco.

My dog has a swollen upper eye lid (very small swell) is there anything i can do or should i take her to the vet.
Thanks for using Boop by Petco. A picture might be helpful in getting you a more accurate response. If it looks like a single lump on the very edge of the eyelid, it could be a benign eyelid cyst or beingn tumor. These we often leave alone unless they bother the surface of the eye or they are getting large. If it is not very defined swelling (just a general “puffiness”) it could be the beginnings of an allergic reaction, bug bite, etc. You can try some Benedryl just in case but if the swelling gets worse throughout the day, or you see any other signs of allergic reaction (vomiting, diarrhea, collapse, hives), you need to head to the vet right Immediately as severe allergic reactions can be life-threatening. My dog has a swollen eye. He has not had any accidents or anything. I’ve been doing warm compress but not seeing any improvement. He doesn’t have any other symptoms and has been on the Same food which is pure balance salmon.

It would be best to have him evaluated by a veterinarian for further assessment at this point as this may be something concerning such as a corneal injury if it is in the eyeball per se for example or due to an infection of the skin around it though it is not possible to know this based on a picture. I recommend you have him evaluated by a veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. Best of luck!

Hi, thanks for using Boop by Petco! Lola is adorable! I would schedule an appointment when your Vet opens Monday, I don't think it is an emergency. You can start warm compressing it to see if that helps. It could be a stye or an infected gland in the eye lid and a very small chance it could be demodex. Hi there and thank you for using Boop by Petco to address your concern. From the picture, it appears that the eye is much large than the left eye, indicating either trauma to the eye or a disease such as glaucoma. I suspect this is likely due to trauma. He may have fallen while at home and hit his head or ran into something and his eye is now wanting to fall out of the socket. I would recommend applying cool and warm compress to the eye to help take down some of the inflammation and placing a plastic cone around his neck so that he does not further traumatize the eye. I would recommend getting him in to see a veterinarian right away when you can so that the most appropriate diagnostic and treatment recommendations can be made. I hope this helps! I would also recommend giving Well and Good Buffered Aspirin for Dogs (can find at Petco). This is concerning and could be due to conjunctivitis as you pointed out though other possibilities such as a foreign body reaction, corneal ulcer or laceration or even inflammation of the periocular structures could also be going on. Regardless, this does warrant a visit to your veterinarian as soon as possible as he is likely painful. They would be able to examine his eye closely and start therapy based on findings. Hello. It appears that the upper eyelid is inflamed. This is a condition called blepharitis. It could be an allergic reaction to something in the park. You can apply warm compresses to the area alternating with cool compresses to help relieve the swelling. (3-4 times a day). If it has not improved in the next 24-48 hours, I would have your vet examine her and determine if further treatment is needed.

I would take her into the ER vet today, any eye problem should be considered an emergency because leaving it untreated can lead to vision loss. I would not give her any drops. It may be the wrong treatment for her eye problem, and you are correct that you don't want to complicate treatment or accidentally harm her. Having her seen by an ER vet is best, and they can prescribe the correct treatment. Best of luck with her, she is simply lovely! I would recommend getting this assessed by an emergency vet urgently - it may be swollen due to an allergic reaction but there may also be blood or an abscess pushing on the eye which could damage the eye long term. A cold compress held gently above the eye may help to reduce swelling whilst you organise a vet check

Thank you for using Boop by Petco! I can see a small amount of inflammation and hair loss around the eye. This is an indication of chronic itching. This can be caused by conjunctivitis, allergies, or irritation caused by an ulcer or foreign body. Your vet can rule out serious conditions such as a foreign body or ulcer, and prescribe any inflammatory eye drops or a special diet in case of allergies. In the meantime, you can get Lito an E-collar or “cone” to prevent him from scratching and causing further damage. I hope this helps and that all is well!
