My dog has recurring UTIs. Can I give her bladder supplements safely?

My dog has had 2 UTIs over the past 2/3 months. I want to start her on bladder supplements, but want to make doubly sure they will be safe.

Thank you for contacting Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach with your question about Bella. You are absolutely correct, you need to make sure they are safe before giving them to her. Without knowing the type and brand of supplement, I can't say if they are safe to give to her or not. Speak to her vet about the supplements you want to give her, and they can advise you on the safety and efficacy of them. I hope this helps!

Hi there and thank you for using Boop by Petco to address your concern. If Kansas has an active UTI, I would recommend antibiotics for treatment. If there is not a current infection and an infection was just treated, you can use cranberry supplementation to help maintain urinary tract health. I recommend using Paxon but there are many other choices and you can find them at Petco. I hope this helps! Thank you for submitting your question regarding Buddy. Cosequin and Duralactin are typically safe supplements. It is unusual though for a male dog to have recurrent urinary tract infections. He should have a sterile urine sample submitted for a urine culture after finishing his most recent round of antibiotics. This will ensure the infection has actually resolved. X-rays of his belly are useful to look for bladder stones as these can predispose a dog to infections. I hope this information helps!

Hi there and thanks for your post on Boop by Petco. The best thing to do for a suspected urinary tract infection is to have Twinkles see her veterinarian for a urine test to confirm the infection and antibiotics. There are no home treatments or over the counter medications or supplements that can help treat a urinary tract infection. A supplement that can help prevent future urinary tract infections, however, is a cranberry extract supplement called Crananidin that you can purchase OTC at your local pet supplies store. Good afternoon! Our dog is 6. He is Yellow Lab and Mastiff. We were giving him a Glucosamine and Chondroitin Supplement. He came down with a UTI, is there any correlation between the two? We are now very leery of starting it back up.
No, there should not be any correlation. As a matter of fact Glucosamine has benn shown to be beneficial for the lining of the bladder also. You can keep giving the chondroitin and glucosamine to MoJo. But do have the UTI diagnosed and treated by a veterinarian. Male dogs rarely get UTIs, so there may be something more serious going on such as a kidney infection or prostate infection.

My dog was diagnosed with a UTI and given medication. What are some foods, that she should eat, that can help alleviate symptoms or prevent future episodes.
Hi, thanks for using Boop by Petco! Sometimes urinary tract infections are just a one time unfortunate event. In females it is due to an ascending bacterial infection because the anus and vulva are close to each other. If she gets reoccurring infections I would have your Vet examine her vulva to see if it is recessed/tucked, make sure she doesn't have a dermatitis around her vulva, check her for hypothyroidism (low thyroid which pre-disposes to infections), culture the urine to check for resistant bacteria and bladder stones. Otherwise there is no food that prevents bacterial urinary tract infections. Diet can help with crystals in the urine and bladder stones. Hello, and thanks for using Boop by Petco. Yes, that product should be pretty safe. However, I don't recommend giving supplements such as this without being directed by a vet. The most important way to support Bruno's organ function is with a good high quality food, and good preventative care (disease prevention through vaccination, parasite control, etc). Milk thistle is a great liver support, but the other ingredients have limited data in dogs and, while probably safe, I would not recommend them.

I'm so sorry Belle is having urinary tract infection problems. I have not used Might Petz Max Cranberry, but am unsure why it has cranberry seed oil instead of dried cranberry extract in it. There is evidence to suggest that dried cranberry extract is of benefit in preventing urinary tract infections caused from E. coli bacteria, but it does not seem to be because of the pH. Most often, the bacteria increase the pH of the urine and getting rid of the infection will decrease the pH back to normal. However, I do recommend urinary tract supplements for dogs with recurrent urinary tract infections, so I would ask your vet for a recommendation for a cranberry supplement. Thanks for using Boop by Petco and I’m sorry to hear Allie isn’t feeling well. I would not give her any medications not prescribed to her as they could have toxic effects. I would continue to give the antibiotic and definitely follow up with your vet as soon as possible. I ask recommend an x-ray to look for stones in her bladder that could be causing the symptoms. Can I give my dog human antibiotic Clindamycin HCL 300mg to help her for UTI
Hello. It is unfortunately impossible for us to recommend using human medication without knowing there is a real problem with your pet. At best, you may be giving an unnecessary medication & at worse, you may be treating inappropriately & causing a simple infection to become much worse. other than diet change and water intake, can I give my dog a supplement to help with preventing cystine bladder stones?
There is currently no supplement available that will prevent Cystine bladder stones unfortunately. Our only options here are a prescription diet available through your veterinarian. The diet ensures that the ph of the urine is optimal for crystals not to grow and also that the pet drinks more water and helps dilute the urine. Supplements would not be strong enough to make those kinds of changes; therefore we have to approach crystal management from a diet change perspective only.
