My dog ate 100% cacao powder. Is this an emergency? What to do?

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Male | neutered | 11 years and 8 months old | 30 lbs

My dog got into a bag of 100% Cacao powder. I am not sure how much he ingested. The bag was still full when I found it on the floor. Not sure what I should do.

Thank you for contacting Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach with your question about Gibson. This is a medical emergency and you need to take him into a vet immediately. This is one of the most toxic types of chocolate and takes the least amount to cause toxicity. Because you don't know how much he ingested, you have to take him into a vet now to get treated for chocolate toxicity. Best of luck.

Hi, thanks for using Boop by Petco! Chocolate toxicity is based on the weight of the dog and the amount and type of chocolate eaten. The picture above looks like it mostly contains peanut butter and other ingredients. But to play it safe I recommend that you take Tulio to a Vet or an emergency hospital to induce vomiting and give activated charcoal. Hopefully that will prevent any chocolate toxicity and any gastro-intestinal and pancreatic side effects. Another option is to call the ASPCA poison control hotline. They have a lot more information about the amount of chocolate present in these products and can calculate if he ate enough for it to be a problem. There is a ~$65 fee, but it may avoid going to the emergency hospital. The number is (888) 426-4435. I hope this helps and I wish Tulio the best!

Hello there I just got home and I saw my dog had lot's of cookies and chocolates from the table. Is there anything that I have to do?
Hello and welcome to Boop by Petco. Chocolate is toxic to dogs, and the severity is dependent on the amount of chocolate eaten. If you can determine the type of chocolate (white, milk, dark, etc.) and the exact amount (number of ounces or grams), then you can call your local 24 hour clinic and ask if that amount is toxic or not. If it is, then you will need to get Vito to throw up, and then depending on what is thrown up and how much chocolate was ingested, IV fluids, and medications, might be required. Chocolate toxicity causes vomiting, diarrhea, tachycardia (high heart rate), arrythmias (Abnormal heart beat rhythm), tremors, seizures and death, often in that order, depending on how much was eaten. Best of luck with Vito, hopefully it wasn't too much chocolate.

However, how likely she is to develop a severe reaction depends on the exact amount of chocolate ingested which varies per package. The amount of chocolate in ounces would be in the bag and that information would be quite helpful in order to know how serious this can be. Having said that, it would be indicated to have her evaluated by a veterinarian as soon as possible to check the amount of chocolate ingested but also to check her for manifestations of chocolate toxicity and treat accordingly. Chocolate toxicity can result in gastrointestinal signs, heart issues and even neurological signs such as seizures. If this just happened, a veterinarian would be able to possibly induce vomiting to try to retrieve some of the chocolate. Good luck!

Dog ate two sugar free chocolate cookies an hour ago but has not vomited. Cannot afford local emergency vet and it is not my dog. I am caring for it while roommate is deployed.

My dog ate 1 entemanns little bites fudge brownie muffin.. is that enough to hurt him? Not sure what to do here since we are away right now. He is a 15-16lb Pomeranian.
Hello and thank you for reaching out to Boop by Petco. These brownies are typically milk chocolate, which is not the most toxic type of chocolate for dogs. He is small, though, so it wouldn't take a lot of chocolate to make him sick. It is likely that your pet will develop some diarrhea for the next couple days. You may also notice that he seems anxious or hyperactive. The most dangerous part about chocolate is the affect it can have on the heart - it causes increased heart rate and can cause arrhythmias. If he ate the chocolate within the last 2-3 hours, I recommend inducing vomiting with a teaspoon of hydrogen peroxide. If he doesn't vomit after 15 minutes, this can be repeated once. Alternatively, you can monitor for the development of any clinical signs and have him seen by a vet if you see them! I hope this is helpful!

Hi my dog just ate a whole chocolate Easter egg candy (about 9oz) she only weighs about 2 pounds at the most, should I be concerned and what should I look for?
Yes, I would be very concerned about this and recommend you take her to a vet immediately. They can induce vomiting and give treatment to prevent life-threatening complications. Signs of toxicity are hyperactivity, vomiting, diarrhea, tremors and seizures. Candy is expected to have all of these signs if not treated soon enough. Unfortunately, there is not much that can be done at home for this. She will need to go to the emergency vet. I hope that helps and all is well with Candy.

If this was milk chocolate then there is a very low risk that this was enough to cause any major issues with your pets. Dark chocolate has a bit higher rate of toxicity risk, but even still it would have to be ingestion of the powder directly for that to be considered a substantial ingestion amount. If it was only a quarter size of liquid left then they should be fine. Continue to feed them normally and monitor for the next 24 hrs for any upset stomach symptoms (i.e. vomiting, diarrhea, lack of appetite) and have the seen by your vet if this occurs, but again there is a very low chance this will.
