Why is my 5-month-old Yorkie puppy constipated and not pooping?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Yorkshire Terrier | Female | unspayed | 5 months and 24 days old | 12 lbs

My 5 month old Yorkie. 4.7 pounds. Not spayed. Has not defacated since yesterday at 10am. So it’s been 19 hours. Her last bowel movement was a bit soft but it’s because I’m slowly changing her food. I slowed down even more and added more of the old food recently. She’s currently on Cefpodoxime for Bacterial Pyoderma. The tablets are 100mg but the vet said to cut it in 4 pieces and only give her 1/4th of the dose. What could be causing her constipation? She’s still eating a lot, peeing, she plays

Hello and thank you for contacting Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. Some dogs can withhold bowel movement for 24hrs or even longer. As long as Molly is not straining to pass stools, is not vomiting and her energy level is high, you should monitor her at home. Most of the dogs will poop within 1hr after eating, so please see if she poops after the next meal. However, if she does not pass any stools in the next 12-18hrs, a visit to your local vets will be recommended. The tablets that she is taking don't have any effect on the defecation but they may cause mild diarrhea.
