My dog's neuter incision is red and tender. Is a vet visit necessary?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier | Male | neutered | 11 months old | 35 lbs

Our dog (35 lbs, wheaten terrier, 11 months) was neutered a week ago. Last night we switched from the cone to a donut. This morning the incision is red and tender to the touch. Do we need to take him to the hospital?

The wound is still inflamed but there are no evident signs of infection. Make sure he is not licking it and possibly put the buster collar (cone) again if needed. If you notice any discharge from the wound a check up will be needed.

It is important to make sure he is not licking at the incision area which can cause infection. If he is not wearing a cone (e-collar) than it is important that you place one on him to prevent any self trauma. You can apply a cool compress to the area for 5-10 minutes every 4-6 hours until you get him to your veterinarian for additional pain medications.
