My Yorkie puppy has a mild skin infection. Does she need steroids?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Yorkshire Terrier | Female | unspayed | 5 months and 22 days old | 12 lbs

5month Yorkie. Not spayed 4.7 pounds. I took her to the vet today and they told me she has a skin infection, on the paper they gave me it says she has Bacterial Pyoderma. I looked up photos of it and it looks similar but my Yorkie’s skin is MUCH less severe. She only has about a 3 or 4 of what look like pimples? (Pus) on her lower abdomen. They prescribed her Cefpodoxime 100mg But to only give 1/4th of pill and Prednisolone 5ml oral solution for 10 days. Does she really need steroids for this?

Based on your description and her age, I personally would not recommend steroids for this skin infection. Express your concerns to the vet and consider not giving the steroids going forward. Often-times a topical spray that contains a steroid is helpful and not as much of an issue as oral steroids can be. The antibiotics alone however should take care of her skin condition if this is just a bacterial pyoderma. I hope that this helps! Best of luck with your pet Molly moving forward. Take care.
