My dog's lip bruise keeps opening and bleeding. What should I do?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Labrador Retriever | Female | spayed | 2 years and 7 months old | 60 lbs

My dog has what looks like a bruise on her upper lip. It appeared to be healing, but she has since started excessively licking her paws again and the bruise opened. Now she's bleeding again. I don't know what to do since I can't really expect her to stop living her upper lips.

This looks very inflamed and given the severe itching/licking I recommend an urgent physical exam and skin check to rule out infection and identify the underlying trigger such as allergy or immune mediated disease. Referral to a dermatology specialist and biopsy may be worthwhile
