My dog's swollen, leaking toe: vet found nothing. Is it a cyst?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Hi! My dog have had this swollen toe for about a week now. He got some irritation/allergies in periods, which causes him to lick his paws but that has never caused his toe to get this swollen like it is now. It also seems like some liquid is coming out of it. I’ve been to a local vet and they did an x ray but couldnt find anything. They put him on antibiotics and some pain meds. But I still feel something is wrong.. Is there anything you can see on these pictures? Could it be some sort of cyst?

Hello and thank you for contacting Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. The wound and swelling could be caused by a foreign body, like a splinter or a piece of grass seed that penetrated under the skin. If there is no improvement to antibiotics and anti-inflammatory medications, Hjalmar should have the swelling lanced and flushed under sedation.
