My cat sniffed Icy Hot and drooled. Is it poisonous? Vet visit?

hi! i put icy hot on my shoulder, and my cat was sniffing it through my shirt and was drooling. once away from my shoulder, he was fine. i’m worried about him getting poisoned but he is acting fine as long as he is away from my shoulder. i washed off the cream and i am sleeping with it covered just in case, but do i need to take him to the emergency vet?

Thank you for contacting Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach with your question about Link. No you don’t need to take him into the emergency vet. As long as he doesn’t ingest any, he won’t get poisoned. Just keep him away from your shoulder if you use it. I hope your shoulder feels better soon!

Hi, and thanks for your question. I've looked up some information for you about Icy Hot. It contains menthol, which should be harmless, but it also contains salicylates, which are essentially the same as aspirin. This is potentially harmful to a cat, especially their GI tract and kidneys. Unfortunately I don't have any information about dosage - how much is definitely dangerous. I would contact an emergency clinic in your area, who can contact the Animal Poison Control line run by the ASPCA - they will hopefully have some information about previous Icy Hot ingestions in cats and they should be able to guide you.

If he isn't constantly licking the cream, it's not likely to be why he is drooling, he is probably drooling because of a teeth problem or because of nausea. you need to take him to the vet in order to get it checked.

Thank you for using Boop by Petco! I can see that there was some garlic and onion in the salsa, which can be toxic to pets. However, these ingredients are toxic in larger amounts, and it does not seem like you used much of the salsa in your queso. I recommend keeping a close eye on Marvin - he should be seen by a vet if he develops lethargy, vomiting, or inappetance. I hope all is well!

Hello, and thanks for your question. Chili pepper ingestion would cause a burning sensation in the mouth which is likely the cause of Gracie's drooling and odd behaviour. You could try offering her some milk which may help to reduce the discomfort in her mouth. It doesn't sound she would have ingested much of the actual chili peppers, so I am not too worried about further problems, but if you do notice any vomiting or diarrhea tonight, I would take her to the vet. They may recommend medication to help settle her tummy, protect her intestines, and reduce nausea. I hope this helps, and that Gracie feels better soon!

If he vomited and then ate afterwards and seems normal now then he should be fine. Cats are poisoned much less than dogs since they generally only taste bad things rather than eating a large amount. Because Blue only licked it so briefly, I would not rush her into a vet. You may see some drooling and frothing at mouth. I would rinse out her mouth with cool water using a syringe, and keep an eye on her. If she does start acting out of the ordinary, starts having uncoordinated movements, tremors, convulsions, or seizures, I would take her into a vet immediately.

Thank you for contacting Boop by Petco with your question about Tater. Poor boy. I'm wondering if he's nauseous from licking the bar of soap causing the drooling. Feed him a bland diet of boiled white meat chicken (no bones) in small amounts several times a day for a couple of days. Then slowly add back in his normal diet. If the drooling continues on the bland diet, he refuses to eat the bland diet, he vomits the bland diet, develops diarrhea, stops drinking water, starts vomiting water, or becomes very lethargic, he will need to see a vet right away. I think you are worrying too much. When gets lick a toxic substance they almost always start drooling and foaming at the mouth. If he didn't do that then he likely didn't get enough or any at all in his mouth. Just monitor him for now and if he starts acting sick then I would get him to your vet for an exam. Best wishes.
