My dog isn't pooping daily after diarrhea. Is it normal? What helps?

Pet's info: Dog | Shih Tzu | Male | neutered | 7 years and 5 months old | 12 lbs

My dog Romeo was at the vet on 7/8 with diarrhea and was placed on Endosorb and antibiotic for 5 days. He didn’t poop until 7/11 then 7/13 again. He’s not pooping everyday. Not sure if it has to do with the past diarrhea cleaning him out maybe or the meds. We have stopped Endosorb per vet recommendation. What can I give him to help him poop? He’s 12 pounds. Do dogs have to poop every single day? He is 7. He is playful and no pain. Thank you

Thank you for contacting Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach with your question about Romeo. You can see a period of not pooping after having diarrhea, so this can be normal. I wouldn't be too worried about it as he's otherwise normal. I would take him for a couple of walks a day, as this can stimulate pooping, and make sure he drinks plenty of water. I hope this helps!

Thank you for contacting Boop by Petco! Yes, this can be completely normal. Given that Romeo's poop is normal looking and not runny means you don't need to be worried. Humans can also vary the amount of times they poop each day, and it's usually not something to worry about as long as everything else is normal. I hope this helps!

My dog Romeo had soft stools and diarrhea over past 3 days. We went to the vet and she prescribed a dose of diagel and metronidazole. He has not pooped today after the diagel yesterday. Is that normal to not poop after taking that or after a case of
I'm glad to hear that Romeo is playful and eating well! It sounds as though he's on the road to recovery. Don't worry - it's completely normal for dogs to go several days without having a bowel movement after experiencing diarrhea. However, if you see that he's straining to poop but can't go, or if he becomes lethargic, vomits or refuses to eat, those would be signs that he should be re-checked by his vet. The only way to know if he has a fever is by using a thermometer rectally. If he'll tolerate it, you can use any digital thermometer and insert it just half an inch or so into his rectum. A normal body temperature for dogs is 100.5 F to 102.5 F. That said, since he's eating and playing normally, and the diarrhea has subsided, there really isn't a need to check his temperature. Hello, dog ate a piece of rib meat on Friday/Saturday. Had watery diarrhea Sunday and Monday. Tuesday in am had a little and then stopped. Dog is BAR temp has remained between around 100.7. Eating a bland diet since Sunday and drinking water normally
Thank you for contacting Boop by Petco with your question about Poe. You can see a period of not pooping after having diarrhea. It may take 24-48 hours before he poops again, sometimes longer. Given that he is eating and drinking, I would not be too worried just yet. If he hasn't pooped after 72 hours, then I would have him checked out by a vet. I hope this helps.

Romeo has been on GI Wet Food Low Fat by Royal Canine. Since being on this food, hes only pooping once a day. He normally poops twice a day prior. He is fine otherwise. Is this normal? Thank you

Just got a rescue 4 days ago and she won’t potty, only once a day or not at all. She’s eating a bland diet because of her diarrhea the past couple days. What should I do?
If she had diarrhea and now she is only pooping once a day or every other day that seems pretty expected to me. Most dogs poop poop 1-2 times a day but if their gut was pretty empty from the diarrhea it may take several days to get back to normal pooping schedule. If she is not eating well or if she is vomiting then I would be concerned, otherwise I would see how she does over the next several days. Best of luck and thank you for using Pet Coach.

This can be normal if for example he had not eaten in several days before he restarted eating or he is or he was on medications for diarrhea which can then result in constipation in some cases. I recommend you add 1 teaspoon of canned pumpkin to his meals which can help with mild cases of constipation. Good luck and have a good one!

My dog hasn't pooped in 2 days after having bloody diarrhea. Vet put him on antibiotics and he hasn't pooped since. I'm worried something is wrong.
Sometimes a dog will not "go" for 24 - 48 hours after anti-diarrheal medications have been started. Think of it like this: the system was essentially empty due to the [diarrhea](https://www.petcoach.co/dog/condition/diarrhea-1/), and if the medication is effective, it will slow down the transit time of food through the GI tract and it will take a couple of days for him to actually need to poop again. As long as he is eating and drinking and feeling good, I would not immediately panic. I do often see dogs recovering from diarrhea go as much as 48 - 72 hours before having a bowel movement. If it's longer than this, or if he's not feeling well, get him rechecked immediately.

If Romeo has had recent excessive stool production, it may be normal to have less for a day or two. It's fine for a dog to go a day without pooping, especially with that history. If he begins to strain unproductively, become painful, uninterested in food, or vomiting, contact your veterinarian.

Thanks for using Boop by Petco! I would agree with your veterinarian. He is likely going to go to the bathroom soon. Oftentimes when a dog is recovering from having diarrhea, they stop defecating for a a day or two. That is not a big concern. I am so glad to hear that Leo is getting better! Keep up the good work!

Hello and thank you for reaching out to Boop by Petco. As long as Doddles is continuing to eat and drink water, and is no longer vomiting, it may take him a day or so to defecate again. It can take 1-4 days for food to transit through a dog's gastrointestinal tract, and since he wasn't eating for a prolonged period, you may not see any stools produced for another day or so.
