Why is my adopted kitten aggressive and attacking me without warning?

I adopted a kitten from a foster home about 9 months ago. He and another kitten, along with the mother cat were placed in a bag and thrown from a moving vehicle. The mother cat died and the foster family hand fed the kittens until they were old enough to eat on their own. This kitten has gotten more and more aggressive. I can count on getting swiped daily. He attacks with no provocation. I’ve gotten him toys, treats and calming spray but am still getting attacked. I’m at a loss now. Help. Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Male | neutered | 8 lbs

Hi there, Sorry to hear about Lenny's aggression problem. I would recommend a few different things. First, a consult with your veterinarian. It sounds like you have done a lot to enrich his environment without much reward, and Lenny may need medication to help his serotonin levels. Your vet can help you determine if Lenny is a good candidate for medical therapy. Fluoxetine (Prozac) and gabapentin are commonly used behavioral drugs in cats. I'm not sure which calming spray you used, but I am a big fan of Feliway if you have not tried that yet. Lenny would also likely benefit from additional forms of mental and physical stimulation. Eating from treat toys to utilize his prey and hunting drive for food is great mental and physical exercise. Learning to walk on a harness and experiencing new environments may also be good for Lenny. Dr. Karen Pryor also has a great website with articles on companion animal behavior.
