Is homemade dog food bad for puppies? What should I feed my puppy?

Pet's info: Dog | Toy Poodle | Male | unneutered | 6 months and 14 days old | 10 lbs

I have a 6 month old toy poodle. When he was 4 months old, I switched him to homemade foods thinking it would be better for him (chicken, beef, rice, broccali, pumpkin, no spices or salt or artificial flavoring added) recently added mozzarella cheese and eggs. But yesterday threw up brownish mucous with speckles of blood. local vet said switch to commercial. Due to COVID, never got to speak with him in person but sent out a tech to give me that message. homemade not good for puppies?

Thank you for contacting Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach with your question about Mio. No, homemade diets are not recommended for puppies. It's very hard to get the correct balance of nutrients. You should feed him a commercial diet like Royal Canin, Hill's Science Diet, Purina Pro Plan, or Iams. He needs a puppy food. Vomiting blood is a medical emergency, so he needs to see a vet now. Best of luck.

Any puppy, especially one that is going to be a larger breed dog when fully grown, should be eating a kibble diet that is formulated for puppies/growth. Highly recommended dog food brands include Purina, Hills Science diet, and Royal Canin. That being said, cheaper options such as Pedigree are absolutely fine. We do NOT recommend grain free diets, especially in larger dogs, as they are linked to the development of a deadly type of heart disease called Dilated Cardiomyopathy (DCM). Vegetarian and vegan dog food are also very unhealthy. Dog foods that contain by-product are not bad/unhealthy. By-product can include the internal organs such as liver, heart, even bone, which are all rich in nutrients for dogs. I hope this is helpful! Best of luck finding a food for Apollo.

Hello. By homely, do you mean a homemade diet? If so, it is very difficult to prepare a diet that has all the vitamins, minerals, amino acids & proper balance of protein, carbohydrates & fats that meets a dogs nutritional needs. Royal Canin is an excellent food, so I would really try to maintain this. Hello and thank you for reaching out to Boop by Petco. Congratulations on the new puppy! I recommend purchasing a Small Breed Puppy food. Any of the well-known large dog food companies (Hills, Purina, Royal Canin, Blue Buffalo) will have excellent, well-balanced diets for puppies. There are feeding recommendations on the dog food bags that tell you how much to feed based on weight. Always make sure she has access to water. Do not feed human food, as many foods that we eat (chocolate, onions, garlic, avocado, raisins, grapes) are highly toxic to dogs. I hope this is helpful!

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Dolly. I do not recommend home cooking unless you have the diet formulated by a veterinary nutritionist. I recommend www.balanceit.com if you are interested. Otherwise, I would continue with Royal Canin as it is a high quality and well balanced puppy food. Puppies grow at a rapid rate. Nutritional deficiencies can be very problematic at this age. I hope this information helps!

What are the home nutrition ways for parvovirus puppy.
Hi, thanks for using Boop by Petco! Poor Orioz! Once Orioz has stopped vomiting, gently start syringe feeding a well balance canned puppy food (purina proplan puppy, royal canin, Hills, etc). Syringe small amounts several times per day. Add water to the canned food to make it more liquidy so it can pass through the syringe. Skip a feeding if he vomits. Continue syringe feeding until he starts to eat on his own. This can take several days. I hope this helps and I wish Orioz a speedy recovery!

What are the best homemade dog foods? that I can feed to my puppy as I can't feed commercial dog food as it is not available near me.
Homemade foods are tough because they are almost always deficient in vitamins and minerals without a supplement. It is not impossible, however. I like the website balance it.com. You can set up an account, look for recipes, and they can even analyze the nutrients in your current recipe. The key is a meat+ grain+ fruits and veggies for nutrients. Good luck!

My puppy refuses solid food and he vomits and we are recommended to feed him canned gravy dog food so what are the best options? Options which are economical but healthy for a sick puppy.
Thank you for using Boop by Petco. I'm sorry Dobby is so sick. First, I would ask his veterinarian what the best food for his condition is. Otherwise, here are my favorite foods for sick animals that aren't eating well. If it is available to you Hills Science diet A/d formula or Royal Canin R/S are critical care formulas that are baby food consistency and very calorie rich for sick animals. They can be thinned with a bit of water and syringe fed if needed. If these are not available, any high quality wet puppy food can be blended with a bit of water to make a slurry if needed. Hi, thanks for using Boop by Petco! Any of the following brands can be fed so long as it is puppy food for small dogs. The food needs to be slowly transition over 7-10 days introducing the new food in about 20% increment every other day. For detail, contact your veterinarian on how to transition the food. Recommended brands are Royal Canin, Hill's Science Diet, Purina Pro Plan, and Iams. Choose one, and stick with it until about one year of age. After that, transition to an adult formula for small breeds from the same brand. Void feeding anything other than the dogs food and a few treats made specifically for dogs. Hopes this helps!
