My dog keeps reverse sneezing. When should I take her to the ER?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | American Eskimo Dog | Female | spayed | 9 months and 11 days old | 20 lbs

Hello! Our pup is a 20 pound mini Eskie named Ayla. She has been (I think) reverse sneezing a lot today. I can't tell if it's reverse sneezing or hiccups or Kennel cough, but it's definitely abnormal. She has had at least 10 episodes of these reverse sneezes today. Other than this she has been normal today. Eating, drinking, playing, walking, she seems fine other than these attacks. Should we take her to an animal hospital tonight or wait until Monday for our vet?

Thank you for contacting Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach with your question about Ayla. Oh my, she is super cute! This is a great question. Given that she is otherwise acting normally, I would not rush her into an er vet. It's fine to wait until Monday. If she stops eating, drinking, becomes lethargic, is congested, or has trouble breathing, I'd take her into the er vet right away. I hope this helps!
