My dog got double the Tramadol dose after surgery. Is it serious?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Dachshund | Male | neutered | 7 years and 10 months old | 20 lbs

Our 20 lb dachshund had surgery and was prescribed 1/2 tab of 50mg Tramadol and 1 capsule of 100 mg Gabapentin. My son misread the instruction gave 1 whole tab of 50 mg Tramadol which is double the dose. How serious is this and is there anything we can do right now?

Hello and thank you for contacting Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. One 50mg tablet of Tramadol is still within the dose range for his weight. Reggie may be more sleepy and quiet for 8-12hrs but there should not be any more serious side effects.
