My cat's nipple is red, swollen, and losing hair. Should I worry?

I am concerned about my cat’s nipple. It looks very red and swollen and might be losing some hair around it. I believe there was a scab around it the other day (but I am not 100 percent sure).

Thank you for contacting Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach with your question about Pippa and for providing pictures, they are very helpful. I agree there is redness and swelling around the area, and I do see hairless as well. It may be she injured herself. The redness and swelling do indicate infection, although I can't say that for certain without seeing her in person. I would have her seen by a vet. The vet can diagnose what is causing this problem and will treat her. Give her vet a call now to make her an appointment. I hope this helps!

Thanks for using Boop by Petco! It is hard to know for sure without an examination. This could be a growth for example. If you think it is just very mild then monitor her closely and have her examined if at any point it progresses or it just does not resolve within the next month or so. Hopefully this is just transient inflammation. Best of luck!

Hello and welcome to Boop by Petco. From the image there is nothing abnormal that can be seen. It is possible that there is just a fat pad under the nipples in that region, and that is why the skin is hanging down low. I recommend monitoring it for now, and having your vet take a look the next time you are in. If it becomes uncomfortable, has discharge, becomes swollen, red, hot, or cold, then have it seen right away. It is likely just a fat pad that sits in that region. Best of luck with Shay.

I see what you mean about Pepper's nipple, it is a big redder around the base and more enlarged than the nipple in the third picture. What I am a bit worried about is the small lump, and due to that, yes I think it should be checked out by a vet to be safe. I don't think it's a serious issue, but I cannot say that for sure without seeing her, so having it checked out by a vet is best. Give her vet a call now to make her an appointment. My puppy has injured one of her nipples due to which it is swollen and pinkish and has a red clot at the top. There is no discharge. What should I do?
Thanks for visiting Boop by Petco. Poop puppy. I can't really appreciate the swelling or clot that you have described, based on the photo you have attached. In fact, the nipple that is displayed here looks perfectly normal, pinkish in color with a protruding nipple. There is no bright bloody red discharge or scab seen at all here. If you are however, seeing something that isn't displayed in this photo, you can try just cleaning it with Betadine diluted 50:50 with warm water once a day until it heals. You can also apply just a thin layer of Neosporin on the area twice daily (if there is a brusie or small superficial cut of some sort). If you wish to repost another photo that maybe shows the area of concern a bit better,t then feel free to do so. Othewise this area looks just fine and Luna will likely be ok. I noticed today that my cats vaginal area is red and swollen , she’s not acting different she’s not in pain or anything I just want to make sure it’s not anything I should be worried about.
Hello. Although it is not usually noticeable, you do indicate that Oreo has not been spayed. I would suspect then she is in heat. If you could post a picture, that might help, but if she seems to be comfortable, not licking or excessively grooming the area, & you are not seeing any discharge, then just watch the area. If the redness does not go down in a week, do have your veterinarian take a look. Thanks for using Boop by Petco.

My neutered male cat has a swollen, red, crusty nipple. We've been watching it and it has gotten bigger. Is it most likely an infection or cancer..?
It would be hard to determine what the growth is without having it examined by a vet. Infections such as abscesses often are hot to the touch, painful, swell rapidly and may ooze debris from them if they pop open. Tumors and other growths may have different rates of growth and may or may not be bothersome to your cat. It is best to bring him into your vet to have the area looked at, and it may be drained or aspirated to take a sample for sending off to the lab. If the area is an infection, it can be drained and antibiotics given to prevent its return. Until you can get to the vet it is best to not allow your cat to lick or chew at the area with the use of a T-shirt or Elizabethan (cone) collar so that bacteria or a secondary infection are not introduced.

Thank you for using Boop by Petco! Food allergies are a possibility in cats, however, fleas can also cause an allergic reaction that may look like this. Bacterial, fungal, and certain mites can also cause redness and itching, so a skin scrape would help make a diagnosis. Your vet can also recommend topical wipes, rinses, and ointments that may help with the itching and infection if present. I hope this helps and am happy to answer any other questions you may have!

Hello, thank you for using Boop by Petco. This mass looks pretty serious. Any type of color change, especially dark like this one, makes us suspicious of cancer. I suggest you take her to your vet for an exam. Likely this mass will need to be surgically removed and sent to a laboratory for histopathology testing. I don't mean to scare you but I don't think this is something to ignore. I hope this helps. Best wishes.

Thanks for using Boop by Petco! I am afraid that while this could be an extra unilateral nipple, it actually is most likely a cutaneous mass. This could be a benign or malignant growth. This is often differentiated by a test called a fine needle aspirate (FNA) which is a pain free, inexpensive and easy procedure which in most cases will help reach a diagnosis. Sometimes a biopsy is needed for a definitive diagnosis. I am really hoping for something benign. Good luck and have a good day!

Can cat nipples fall off? I thought her nipple felt very scabby. Rub it a few times and then it came off. Theres a small red legion but no pain
It probably wasn't her nipple but a build up of dead skin and sebaceous material collecting around the nipple itself. If it doesn't bother her and she's not licking excessively, then there is likely no cause for concern. Monitor the redness for resolution.
