My dog accidentally got a double dose of phenobarbital. Is he okay?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Cane Corso | Male | neutered | 4 years and 2 months old | 140 lbs

My dog accidentally was given a double dose of phenobarbital. His prescription is for 2 tablets every 12 hrs of 1gr (64.8mg). I've called ASPCA poison control but my call was placed on a waiting list. It was about 30 mim between the first and second dose.

Hello and thank you for contacting Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. Opie will be fine. He may show signs of sedation, lethargy and sleepiness for 8-12hrs but there should not be any more worrying signs. Please, continue with the next dose of phenobarbital as normal.

This would still be in the starting dose range for phenobarbital so I wouldn’t be too concerned about a one time double dose even if she has been in the toxic range in the past. You should give her usual dose on time tonight. If she has a seizure that lasts for more than a few minutes or if she has more than two seizures in 24 hours you should see a vet.
